Top tips on cleaning instruments before autoclaving:
- Clean instruments thoroughly to remove all blood, mucous and tissue deposits
- Whoever is cleaning the equipment should be properly trained
- Disposable gloves and protective clothing should be worn, and if splashes are a risk, a face mask or goggles
- Use a washer disinfector prior to autoclaving, expect for loads of porous nature
- Use an ultrasonic bath with a suitable enzyme detergent cleaner for loads where a washer disinfector isn?t suitable
- A second process, either disinfection or sterilisation, is recommended
- Instruments should be rinsed, dried and checked for damage or loose joints prior to use or storage
Advice on how to prepare instruments for autoclaving:
- If the instruments are to be used immediately after sterilisation they can be placed directly onto the appropriate autoclave tray without any form of packaging
- If instruments are going to be stored for use at a future time the use of appropriate packaging will help to maintain the integrity of the sterilised items
- Only use sterilisation packing materials, such as bags, sheets or pouches that are suitable for use within your autoclave
- Two approved techniques for packing items are wrapping in sheets of sterilising paper and using sterilization pouches
- Single sheets of sterilisation paper are suitable for wrapping sets of instruments
- The packaging being used should be folded around the contents as tightly as possible to reduce the amount of trapped air
- The parcel/bag should be secured with process indicator tape
- The parcel/bag should be labelled for identification and traceability, with the date and contents specified
